Rich Text File (RTF) The Rich Text File (RTF) format is a special Microsoft process that preserves certain formatting in text files. If a document is created and saved in a high-end word processor, such as MS Word, application-specific formatting data is saved along with the text. Many times, the formatting data is unique to that program and cannot be interpreted by other word processors. In some cases, documents created in a one program cannot even be opened in others. However, when a document is saved as a RTF file, with the .rtf file name extension, certain formatting techniques are utilized wherein the important formatting is preserved in a "standard" way. A RTF document can, therefore, be opened in just about any quality word processing program. These files transfer accurately when delivered via disk or across the Internet as an intact file. Some formatting techniques, such as justification, tables, and page breaks, do not accurately transfer when these files are delivered via the internet. RTF has become one of the industry standards whereby documents are created and distributed between various computer platforms and word processing applications. |

Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) The Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file formatting system that enables users to share sophisticated electronic documents across a wide array of otherwise incompatible computer platforms. PDF files do not require the software programs that generated the documents nor the fonts that they used. The majority of quality Websites present their online document downloads as PDF files. Few experienced internet users remain unfamiliar with the PDF format or the FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader software. This FREE "reader" program is easily used to open, read, save, and print documents saved or downloaded using the Adobe PDF format. PDF files are recognized by their .pdf file name extension. Programmers create PDF files by "distilling" documents through software called Adobe Acrobat.
After you install the FREE
Adobe Acrobat Reader program on your computer, you can open, read, search
through, save, and print any PDF document. These capabilities will exist
on your computer regardless of what application was originally used to
generate the text and graphics in the PDF document, and regardless of the
computer platform on which these programs ran. You can double-click any
PDF file displayed in My Computer or Windows Explorer and it will open in
your Adobe Reader program. |
